Arts in Mind
The Arts in Mind (AiM) project aims to raise the self esteem, confidence and aspirations of disadvantaged children in Hull through creative artistic expression.
AiM works with targeted children (age 5-13), identified by professionals within schools and the community, at high-risk of developing mental health difficulties, due to their individual circumstances.
This is achieved by creating art in small groups, within a nurturing and supportive environment, encouraging the children to explore and discuss their emotions and thoughts, and express their individuality creatively.
The current theme of the project is ‘We are all one: exploring identity and embracing diversity’.
Working collaboratively with schools in Hull and children’s organisations such as Action for Children, children will be supported to produce quality artwork culminating in two exhibitions featuring textiles, mosaic, collage and cartoon.
In addition, to tuition provided by the project co-ordinator, further professional artists are employed to provide sessions in dance, drama, music and film to contribute to the theme of embracing cultural diversity and confidence building.
The current themed project runs from 1 September 2011 to 31 August 2012.
The exhibitions will be held in The Ferens Art Gallery, Queen Victoria Square Hull, East Yorkshire HU1 3RA from 4-29 July 2012 and Artlink Centre for Community Arts, 87 Princes Avenue, Hull, HU5 3QP from 2-30 August 2012.
