Many face winter blues
Latest HEY Mind Press release - Many face winter blues
1 in 20 of us living in Hull and East Yorkshire will have been affected by a winter depression over the last few months due to Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D.), a local mental health charity informed today.
During these months, people tend to complain of feeling down, lack of energy, a lethargic attitude to work and generally lower spirits due to S.A.D. Symptoms can usually start when autumn is in full flow and winter is starting to creep in, between September and November.
Experts believe SAD is related to a lack of daylight exposure, which explains why people tend to feel well during spring and summer and only start to experience symptoms when the days get shorter. S.A.D. is extremely rare in those living within 30 degrees of the equator as people are subject to long, constant bright light.
“With the arrival of spring and the longer daylight hours, we can expect the affects of S.A.D. to diminish. Though for many others, symptoms of depression can last all year round,” says Hull and East Yorkshire Chief Executive, Greg Aitkin.
Hull and East Yorkshire Mind has a range of free support services to help people suffering from S.A.D. or any type of mental health issue.
