Olympic Challenge - August 7 2010
On Saturday 7 August, the Olympics Challenges are coming to the Withernsea area to help challenge the stigma and discrimination surrounding mental health in the city.
PACE, a project run by Britain’s most ambitious mental health campaign, Time to Change, is organising the exciting day of events which will range from archery, climbing and power-kiting to rowing, disc golf and raft building.
The fun-filled day is open to all and will take place in Withernsea at Hull Road Playing Fields, between 10am and 4pm. The event aims to inform people about the project’s work in tackling mental health stigma and also hopes to engage with the local community to find out the activities people want in their area.

PACE is working alongside different community groups and stakeholders in the area, including The Health Trainers, Local Council Leisure Service, Children and Family Action, The Shores Community Centre, Play Action Service and Withernsea AFC.
Lee Brown, a Development Worker for Time to Change, said: “We hope that this event will provide a chance for people to come together to discuss how we can work as a community to fight the battle against mental health discrimination through sport and exercise. “Time to Change believes that raising awareness about mental health is the best way to confront stereotypes and tackle prejudice for which events such as this are vital. We want to work with people in the community who want to speak out against discrimination in positive and constructive ways. The day is also about people coming together for some fun, people of all ages are welcome and we challenge you to come and take part in the Holderness Withernsea Olympics.”
People and community exercise (PACE) is part of the national time to change campaign run by Hull and East Yorkshire Mind. The project works with the local community to increase levels of physical activity through diverse and challenging projects within the Hull and Holderness area.
