POINT

The POINT project, Prescribing On Individual Needs Together, provides support and guidance on social issues affecting people with mild to moderate mental health problems.

POINT - Some background information

There are many social factors that can contribute towards or can exacerbate mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression – for example debt, problems with benefits, accessing training or employment, social isolation etc. It has been recognised that many people with mental health issues would benefit from engagement with activities that address any social underlying risk factors, and strengthen and protect positive mental health, rather than needing medical intervention

This has lead to the development of a concept called ‘Social Prescribing’ which is a process for linking people with common mental health problems with non-medical sources of support in their local community.

The POINT Project

Hull and East Yorkshire Mind has initiated the POINT (Prescribing on individual needs together) Project. This is a project which supports people in tackling the non-medical problems that are contributing towards their mental health issues.

The POINT worker will meet with the client and work with them to see what social issues they may need to address. This will help to formulate an action plan to identify ways of moving forward with these issues and to provide any additional information or guidance needed. A further two appointments will be offered to review the progress and to identify alternative sources of support for any future need.

If the POINT worker feels the client would benefit from someone doing more work with the client on a one-to-one basis then they may refer the client to the mentoring project for that support.

The Mentoring Project

Some clients need more direct assistance in undertaking the activities in their action plan.
Volunteer mentors will be able to help with a variety of things such as:
• Help to overcome social isolation by accompanying you to social activities
• A chance to meet up with someone who can help you to build up confidence
• Support in attending an appointment. This could be in relation to benefits, debt or housing problems, or appointments to any other agencies
• Support with attending hospital appointments
• Someone attending court with you
• Support with training and employment issues
• Help with weight management and advice with healthier living
• Someone to attend a community group or activity
• Someone to go to church with you
• Support with a particular training course you would like to attend
• Someone to attend support or self-help groups with you
• Any other support with a particular social or wellbeing issue
